Microsoft Expands in North Carolina with Major Land Acquisition

Posted: February 19, 2025 | Industry News

In a significant move that could reshape the economic landscape of Person County, Microsoft has acquired a vast 1,385-acre site along the North Carolina-Virginia border. The tech giant reportedly secured the land, known as the Person County Mega Park, for approximately $26.85 million, according to county property records.

A Strategic Investment with Future Potential

While Microsoft has yet to announce specific plans for the newly acquired land, officials in Person County are optimistic about the economic benefits that could follow. Brandy Lynch, Person County’s economic development director, emphasized the positive impact of Microsoft’s presence, highlighting potential job creation, a stable tax base, and increased housing opportunities.

“The company has been actively exploring development opportunities in North Carolina and worked closely with local leaders to select this site,” Lynch stated. “Although final project plans, investment amounts, and workforce numbers have not been determined, updates will be shared as more information becomes available.”

Person County Board of Commissioners Chairman Gordon Powell described the acquisition as potentially the most significant economic development in the county’s history. The Mega Park, located in Woodsdale Township just north of Roxboro, offers key infrastructure, including 230kV electric transmission lines, and is serviced by Duke Energy and Piedmont Electric.

Microsoft’s Growing Footprint in North Carolina

This latest purchase is part of Microsoft’s broader investment in North Carolina. The company is actively developing multiple data center sites in the state. In late 2022, Microsoft announced a $1 billion investment to construct four data centers in Catawba County, roughly 50 miles northwest of Charlotte. Construction has already begun on three of those sites.

A Microsoft representative noted, “For nearly 50 years, Microsoft has supported local business growth, community development, and innovation. While we don’t have specific details to share about the Person County purchase at this time, we are committed to working with the community as we move forward.”

North Carolina: A Rising Tech Hub

North Carolina continues to attract major technology companies due to its business-friendly environment, strong infrastructure, and skilled workforce. Google also has a presence in the state, further reinforcing the region’s appeal for data centers and other tech-driven enterprises.

With Microsoft’s latest land acquisition, Person County could soon become a key player in the state’s growing technology and data infrastructure sector. Local leaders and residents will be watching closely as Microsoft unveils its plans for the site in the coming months.
