Restoration work is set to begin soon at the Poplar Boat Launch, an important access point to the Nolichucky River located within the Pisgah National Forest. The project is a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and the National Forest Foundation, aimed at rebuilding the launch after it sustained significant damage during Hurricane Helene.
“This is a well-loved spot on the forest where people come to recreate and enjoy the outdoors,” said Appalachian District Ranger Jennifer Barnhart. The upcoming improvements are designed to enhance safety and accessibility for local residents, visitors, and the outfitting community—helping ensure the Nolichucky River remains a valued recreational resource for years to come.

New renderings outline a resilient, flood-conscious design that focuses on long-term durability and environmental health. Planned features include:
Together, these upgrades will help the site better withstand future flooding events while restoring reliable public access to the river.
Construction is expected to begin in January 2026, with the upgraded boat launch anticipated to reopen in spring 2026.
In the meantime, the Poplar Boat Launch area has been temporarily reopened for day use only until reconstruction begins. Visitors should note that the site is currently unimproved, with no services available. Parking is limited to gravel surfaces only, and visitors are asked not to block roadways or nearby railroad tracks.
Because storm-related hazards may still exist on Forest Service lands and within the Nolichucky River, the public is encouraged to use extra caution when recreating in the area.
