Chowan County is now home to North Carolina’s second land-based wind farm. Timbermill Wind, developed by Apex Clean Energy, has started operations, bringing both clean energy and economic benefits to the area. The project includes 45 wind turbines spread across 6,000 acres of farmland and managed timberland.
The turbines generate 189 megawatts of electricity, enough to power thousands of homes. More than just a renewable energy source, the project is an investment in the local economy, creating jobs and providing landowners with new income opportunities.
Apex Clean Energy spent over a decade planning and developing Timbermill Wind. Chowan County was selected for its consistent wind, available land, and infrastructure that could support a large-scale wind project.
The permitting process required approvals from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Construction began in May 2023 and provided over 200 jobs, with $25 million spent with North Carolina businesses.
For local landowners, hosting wind turbines provides steady, long-term income. Gene Jordan, a farmer leasing land for seven turbines, sees it as financial security.
“Hopefully, it’s going to be income we can count on,” said Jordan. “One of my brothers is depending on it for retirement, beyond Social Security.”
Timbermill Wind will be the county’s largest taxpayer, contributing $30 million over the next 30 years. These funds will support:
Susan Creed, Executive Director of the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce, emphasized its importance. “Our county has buildings that need repairs, our jail needs upgrades—this money is critical.”
Apex Clean Energy has actively involved the community, hosting public meetings and addressing concerns. Jimmy Merrick, Director of Development at Apex, explained the company’s approach:
“Building community support never stops. We started years ago and will continue for decades.”
The company has also provided $100,000 in community grants and is considering educational tours and school field trips at the wind farm.
North Carolina is emerging as a leader in land-based wind energy. Along with Timbermill Wind, the state is home to another wind farm in Elizabeth City, which has been supplying power to Amazon since 2017.
Katharine Kollins, President of the Southeastern Wind Coalition, sees more growth ahead. “North Carolina has the potential to remain a leader, but future projects will depend on Duke Energy’s commitment to renewables.”
State law requires Duke Energy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, making further wind development likely.
Timbermill Wind is just the start. The project highlights how clean energy can bring economic benefits while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Chowan County residents will see lasting improvements in infrastructure, education, and local services.
With support from state leaders, businesses, and residents, North Carolina is positioning itself as a hub for renewable energy, creating a model for other states to follow.
